WIMBLEDON, England — Before Venus Williams started her quarterfinal here, the ranking of her opponent, Tsvetana Pironkova, seemed inconsequential.
Then Yen-Hsun Lu knocked Andy Roddick from the tournament late Monday, and he shared two important things with Pironkova — a high-profile American opponent and a world ranking of 82. From this strange coincidence, sprang another upset.

WIMBLEDON, England — When John Isner finally won the longest match in tennis history, he collapsed on the Wimbledon grass and then summoned one last burst of energy, springing to his feet to applaud along with the crowd.

The American hit a backhand winner to win the last of the match’s 980 points, and he took the fifth set Thursday against Nicolas Mahut, 70-68.

American John Isner faced Nicolas Mahut of Francewimbledon-tennis-tournament, in a game that entered tennis history, as the longest game ever played. The clash of these two amazing players had to be suspended after five sets, because it was too dark.

They both wanted to keep playing, but there was just not enough light for a proper game.

Boca Raton’s Andrea Collarini finished runner-up in the French Open boy’s final, losing 6-4, 7-5 to his Argentine friend Agustin Velotti. Collarini, who was born in New York but grew up training in Argentina, earlier this year relocated to the USTA National Training Center in Boca Raton, Fla.

Rafael Nadal ran down every shot when it mattered on Sunday, rolling to a straight sets win over a disheartened Robin Soderling for a fifth French Open championship in six years.

Nadal prevailed by scores of 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 at Roland Garros to become just the second man to win at least five French Open titles. Bjorn Borg of Sweden won six.

What is more standing in his way on Friday is Jurgen Melzer, the Austrian who had never once been beyond the third round of a grand slam tournament until this week.
